We’ve been taught that weight is a simple matter of calories in vs. calories out. If you take in more than you burn, you gain weight. Burn more than you consume and you lose weight. Easy right? Well, perhaps the equation is more complicated than that.

A Mother Jones article recently explored whether BPA, the chemical found in everything from aluminum can lining to receipts, can significantly contribute to obesity. More research needs to be done to determine exactly how it works but an excerpt from the article says plenty:
But the UC-Irvine study represents yet another bit of evidence that the FDA, which recently reaffirmed its approval of BPA in can linings, isn’t taking the threat of industrial chemicals in food nearly seriously enough. And it also strongly suggests that at least some of our obesity problem stems not from personal choice but rather from decisions made behind closed doors by the food and chemical industries, which have found it profitable to put this stuff in our food containers.
What do you think about the article? Do you buy BPA-free cans and containers? Will you rethink your choice now? Let us know on Facebook!

As we approach the season of perpetual air-conditioning and fans, electric bills will be rising to keep up with the increased energy usage. If you’re looking to cut down on your energy bill (and who isn’t), unplugging some of the electronics that you don’t use everyday might help. Idle gadgets and appliances use 100 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity nationwide, which costs $11 billion to consumers. From the Mother Jones article:
According to Bruce Nordman, an energy efficiency researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as a general rule of thumb, the bigger—and older—the device, the more power it sucks up while it’s off… Another tip: “When you put your hand on the adaptor, if it’s hot, it’s using energy. If it’s not hot, it’s probably not using very much energy.”
Among the electronics that use the most energy are cable boxes, computers, and tv’s. Now, they don’t recommend unplugging anything you use everyday (like the refrigerator) or that would have to reboot or risk losing your information (such as DVR’s). Energy star appliances are always a great choice for using less electric. But the extra old TV in the guest bedroom, an extra refrigerator in the garage or basement that isn’t being used, etc. can and should be unplugged.

Do you unplug your electronics when you aren’t using them? If you have, have you noticed a decrease in your energy bill? Let us know, we are curious!

From GOOD, a very interesting look at why American’s don’t recycle. In an infographic, we learn which coast of the US recycles most, what they think the benefits are, and unfortunately, that many people find the process of recycling inconvenient and time-consuming.

Among the findings, we also learn that many people still don’t know what’s recyclable, and when they are unsure, 50% will throw the item away anyway. Clearly, although we try to get the message out to recycle, recycle, recycle, no one says WHAT you should be recycling, and because of that uncertainty, people opt not to bother.

Are you surprised by any of the information in the infographic? Do you recycle or are you included in the 10% that tend to forget? How can we make things easier for all? Let’s talk about it on Facebook!
