Elizabeth from PL here: Being a vegetarian, this article on Mother Jones caught my eye this afternoon. Discussing whether vegetarianism is always better for the planet than eating meat, a lifelong vegetarian tries to find out by getting the details behind the different food choices.

In general, Eshel says, it’s true that raw veggies are an excellent nutritional bargain: For every 100 calories of energy put into producing conventional beef, from farm to supermarket shelf, you get only six calories back to eat. Compare that with apples, which yield 110 calories, or raw soy: an amazing 415. In terms of greenhouse gases, switching from a diet that includes red meat to a plants-only one is roughly equivalent to trading in your SUV for a Camry.

However, the same cannot be said for meat substitute products, like veggie burgers and fake bacon. The more processing a food undergoes, the worse it is for our environment. Even some vegetables are bad for the environment, like spinach which requires greenhouses in winter and refrigeration. But there are no shortcuts and it appears there are also no cut-and-dry solutions either, especially without first educating ones self.

What do you think about the article? What reasons do you have for becoming vegetarian (or not!)? Do you believe it is the greenest way to live? Join the conversation on Facebook

Two years after the BP Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, we are getting out first glimpse of the damage that was caused to sea life. Greenpeace filed a Freedom of Information Act Request for communication about endangered and threatened Gulf species in August of 2010, and finally now received a response.

100 photos from the spill are now available and they are pretty shocking. Check out two photos here, and more on the Mother Jones Article:

The fact that these photos weren’t made public at the time of the spill adds to the shock factor. Seeing these photos stirs a sense of urgency to move away from the stronghold of oil and it’s damaging properties, and pursue cleaner energy fuels and alternatives.

Also remember, by purchasing organic clothes, such as Prancing Leopard, you are breaking the cycle of oil-based consumption, as synthetic fabrics are often made of, or with, oil.

What do you think of the photos? How do they make you feel? Talk with us on Facebook

While it is easy to focus on the many environmental challenges and problems our Earth is facing, so often we forget to look for the good news or to enjoy how far we’ve come. This article from Mother Jones shares with us 5 pieces of good news, including amur leopards getting their own natural park and returning a species from extinction.

It is extremely rare that any good news is ever reported, whether it is environmentally related or not. It has been argued that by not reporting this good environmental news, the media is creating a climate of pessimism and a self-defeating attitude. It would be nice to hear more about the good changes that are taking place, and not just the gloom-and-doom we are all so used to.

What other good environmental news have you heard lately? Is it encouraging to hear what is working in our world, rather than always what’s wrong with it? Let us know how you feel on Facebook

A great article by Daily Cup of Yoga about how to overcome your “lizard brain”, more commonly known as the amygdala. This area is in charge of feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, and negativity. They call it the lizard brain because this area evolved a long time ago when our primal concerns were much more prevalent, such as a physical threat of death or losing access to food. Biologically, our stress responses are the same when we face much less dramatic threats now in our everyday lives.

The amygdala can become overstimulated by ongoing stressors and begin to run our lives. The more stress we feel, the more the amygdala are activated. The more they are activated, the more we begin to feel that this state is normal, and so the lizard brain takes over completely, which can wreck havoc on your life.

Identifying and naming the lizard are the first steps in overcoming your lizard. Check out the rest of the article to understand more about working with your inner lizard brain.
